I will begin by saying that I am not a doctor, and have no inside information regarding the health of any Toronto Blue Jays players. Recent information has come to like that Edwin Encarnacion is not feeling 100%.
We were told last night that Edwin Encarnacion was DHing because he had a sore back.
Edwin Encarnacion has back soreness since trip to Anaheim earlier this month and Farrell says he had treatment before game. BB in first AB

And I appreciate that Edwin would play hurt, for the sake of helping the team. Like any objective observer, I would want to know how much he’s helped the club since then. We know he’s hit 4 home runs since the start of that road trip. However, I tallied up his stats from the first game in Anaheim until today at the always handy Baseball-Reference.com.
His slash line, (AVG/OBP/SLG for the unfamiliar is) .186/.266/.386. Our cleanup hitter is hitting like Yuniesky Betancourt. That’s not good. I cannot say that Double E and his achy back are the reason for the slump. Go look at the first sentence of the post. I can say, though, that Encarnacion isn’t doing the things a cleanup hitter should do since the start of the west coast road trip.
So, bad back or no, I would like to see Edwin Encarnacion sit down for 2 or 3 days, get a massage, give his head a shake, and get back to the kind of hitter he was in April.
